Savory braised tofu in a rich soy sauce is served over steamed rice for a complete vegetarian meal. This protein-packed, healthy family dish is budget-friendly and ideal for clean eats.
Press the tofu for at least 10 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut into 1-inch cubes.
Heat 1 teaspoon sesame oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet. Add tofu cubes in a single layer and brown each side for about 2–3 minutes, turning gently to avoid breaking.
Add diced onion, sliced carrot, and minced garlic to the pan. Sauté for 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions turn translucent.
Pour in soy sauce, water, sugar, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer; lower heat to medium-low, cover, and braise gently for 10 minutes, stirring once or twice.
Remove the lid and continue simmering for 4–5 minutes, allowing the sauce to reduce and thicken slightly. Drizzle remaining sesame oil and toss gently to coat the tofu.
To serve, spoon warm steamed rice into bowls, top with braised tofu and vegetables, and garnish with sliced scallions.
