Golden fried sesame balls for New Year are crispy, chewy, and festive. A family celebration treat with sweet filling and lucky sesame coating.
In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups glutinous rice flour, 3 tbsp sugar (for dough), baking powder, and salt. Gradually add 3/4 cup water while mixing to form a smooth, soft dough. The dough should be pliable but not sticky.
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Flatten each piece into a disc shape using your palms. Place about 2 tbsp sweetened red bean paste in the center of each disc and wrap the dough around the filling, sealing the edges tightly. Roll each ball gently until smooth.
Roll the filled balls in water, then coat evenly with sesame seeds. Press gently so the seeds adhere well and form a full coating.
Fill a deep pot with vegetable oil and heat to 320°F (160°C) over medium heat. Carefully lower the sesame balls into the oil in batches. Fry gently, stirring occasionally, to ensure even color and prevent burning.
Fry for 8–10 minutes until golden and crisp, turning up the heat slightly to 340°F (170°C) for the final minute to enhance crispiness. Remove and drain sesame balls on a wire rack. Optionally, sprinkle with 1 tbsp sugar for extra sweetness. Serve warm or at room temperature.
