Chinese bakery hot dog buns wrap fluffy dough around a savory sausage. A protein-rich, family-friendly snack with fresh, soft bread appeal.
Warm the milk to just above room temperature (about 105°F) and dissolve the sugar and yeast in it. Let stand for 5–8 minutes until frothy.
In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg. Knead by hand or mixer for 8–10 minutes, until the dough is soft, smooth, and elastic.
Lightly oil a bowl, place the dough in it, cover, and proof in a warm area for 60–80 minutes or until doubled in size.
Punch down the risen dough. Divide evenly into 8 balls and let them rest, covered, for 10 minutes to relax gluten for easier shaping.
Flatten a ball into an oval, roll it up around a hot dog sausage, pinching seams shut. Place seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat for all buns.
Cover shaped buns and let them rise for 30–45 minutes in a warm spot until puffy. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) during this rise.
Optional: Brush buns with beaten egg for shine. Bake on the middle rack for 18–22 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through, rotating the tray halfway for even browning.
Cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before serving to maintain soft texture.
