Warm, fragrant, and indulgent, Bread Halwa is a classic Indian halwa that melts in your mouth. This cherished family dessert is prepared during festivals, religious occasions, and winter celebrations.
Trim the crusts from the bread slices and cut them into small pieces for even roasting.
Heat 4 tbsp of unsalted butter in a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat. Add the bread pieces and sauté, stirring often, until deep golden and crisp—about 6–8 minutes. Remove and set aside.
In the same skillet, add cashew nuts and raisins; fry for 2–3 minutes until cashews turn light golden and raisins plump. Remove and set aside for garnishing.
Lower the heat to medium-low. Pour in the whole milk and bring just to a gentle simmer. Add the roasted bread; cook, stirring constantly, until the bread absorbs the milk and the mixture thickens (about 7–8 minutes).
Add the sugar and remaining 2 tbsp butter, stirring until the sugar melts and the mix turns glossy and soft. Sprinkle in ground cardamom and rose water; mix well. Cook for 2–3 more minutes until the halwa leaves the sides of the pan. Garnish with fried cashews and raisins before serving warm.
