Pillowy steamed buns filled with sweet red bean paste are a beloved breakfast treat. A vegetarian, family-friendly recipe with naturally sweet, fresh flavor.
In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix well to evenly distribute the yeast.
Warm the milk and water until lukewarm (about 100°F) and add to the flour mixture, followed by the vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 60 minutes, or until doubled in size.
Deflate the dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Flatten each piece into a disk and spoon about 2 tbsp red bean paste into the center. Pinch edges to seal and form a smooth bun.
Place buns seam-side down on parchment squares, cover with a damp towel, and let rise for 20 minutes.
Bring a steamer to a boil over high heat. Lower buns into the steamer basket, leaving space between them. Steam over medium-high heat for 12-15 minutes.
Turn off the heat and let buns sit covered for 2 minutes to prevent wrinkling before serving warm.
