Soak the cashews in ⅓ cup hot water for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, thinly slice the onions.
Heat the ghee in a large, heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and a generous pinch of salt, then sauté until golden brown and caramelized, about 12-15 minutes, stirring frequently for even browning.
Add minced garlic and ginger. Lower to medium heat, and cook for 1-2 minutes until aromatic.
Blend soaked cashews (with soaking water) and yogurt to a smooth paste; add this to the onions. Stir and cook for 2-3 minutes until the paste thickens and releases oil.
Add ground spices and salt. Cook on low for 1 minute to bloom spices, stirring constantly so they don't burn.
Nestle chicken pieces into the pan, turning to coat well with the sauce. Maintain low heat and cover; simmer gently for 15 minutes.
Pour in heavy cream with saffron threads, cover again, and simmer for another 10-12 minutes on low until chicken is cooked through and tender.
Uncover, stir in slivered almonds, and simmer uncovered for 2-3 minutes to slightly thicken the sauce before serving.
