Sweet, aromatic, and deeply satisfying, Kakara Pitha is a beloved Indian dessert with centuries of tradition. This family celebration staple adds sweetness to festivals, weddings, and everyday moments of joy.
Combine semolina, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl. Mix well and slowly add milk, stirring constantly until a pliable dough forms. Let the dough rest for 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, heat grated coconut and jaggery in a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Stir continuously until the jaggery melts and binds the coconut—about 6–8 minutes.
Add cardamom powder to the coconut-jaggery mixture, cook for another 2 minutes, then remove the pan from heat and set aside to cool.
Divide the rested semolina dough into 8–10 equal balls. Flatten each ball in your palm, creating a small disc, and place a spoonful of coconut-jaggery filling in the center. Gently seal the edges to form an oval or round-shaped dumpling, ensuring no cracks.
Heat ghee or vegetable oil in a deep, heavy-bottomed pan to 350°F (medium heat). Fry the stuffed dumplings in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crisp—about 3–4 minutes per side.
Drain the Kakara Pitha on a plate lined with paper towels. Serve warm or at room temperature.
