Pressed pork, ham, Swiss, mustard, pickles — the Cuban sandwich is perfect, and plantain chips on the side make this high calorie lunch complete.
Preheat a sandwich press or large skillet over medium heat. Slice the Cuban bread horizontally and prepare your sandwich assembly area.
Spread yellow mustard evenly on both cut sides of the bread. Arrange half the Swiss cheese on the bottom, then layer with roast pork slices, deli ham, dill pickle slices, and top with the remaining Swiss cheese.
Close the sandwich and spread softened butter on the outside of the bread. Lightly press the sandwich to keep layers tight.
Place the sandwich in the heated press or skillet. Cook with steady medium pressure for about 6–8 minutes per side, flipping as needed, until the bread is golden and the cheese is thoroughly melted.
For plantain chips, peel and thinly slice the plantains. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet to 350°F (medium-high). Fry the plantain slices in batches for 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crisp, then remove to paper towels and immediately season with salt.
Allow the sandwich to rest for 2–3 minutes after pressing. Slice into portions and serve hot with plantain chips on the side.
