Ring-shaped Sicilian cake filled with dried figs, nuts, and chocolate is a Christmas essential. This festive mediterranean pastry is a family holiday tradition across the island.
Combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Cut in the cold butter with fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla extract, then add to the flour mixture. Mix gently until a soft dough forms. Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes.
For the filling: finely chop dried figs, walnuts, almonds, raisins, chocolate, and candied orange peel. Stir with honey and cinnamon until evenly combined.
On lightly floured surface, roll chilled dough into a large rectangle about ¼ inch thick. Spread the filling evenly over the dough, leaving a border along the edges.
Carefully roll up the dough into a log from the long side. Join the ends to form a ring and pinch to seal. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cut shallow slits across the top with scissors for decoration.
Bake in preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 40–45 minutes until golden brown and fragrant. Let cool completely before slicing for best texture.
