Chewy yuan xiao rolled with sweet filling are the signature Lantern Festival dessert. A family tradition with sweet, comforting flavors.
Scoop sweet red bean paste into small balls (about 1 tsp each) and chill them in the fridge for 10 minutes to firm up.
Prepare a large tray with glutinous rice flour. Dip each bean paste ball in water, then roll in the dry flour, repeating until a smooth, thick shell forms around the filling.
Continue adding a few drops of water and rolling in more flour to each piece until each yuan xiao is roughly 1 inch in diameter.
Bring 6 cups of water and a pinch of salt to a gentle boil over medium heat. Carefully add the yuan xiao while stirring to prevent sticking.
Cook until the yuan xiao float to the surface, then simmer for 2–3 more minutes on low heat to ensure the dough is tender and fully cooked through.
Transfer to serving bowls, sprinkle with sugar and sesame seeds if desired, and enjoy warm.
