Hot, cinnamon-sugar coated apple filling inside a crispy fried shell. Nothing fancy, but sometimes that's exactly what you want. Way better than the baked version at other places. 🥧
Peel, core, and finely dice the Granny Smith apple. In a small skillet over medium heat, melt butter and add diced apple, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes until apples are softened and syrupy.
Unroll the refrigerated pie dough and cut into two equal rectangles. Place cooled apple filling in the center of each piece, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges.
Brush the edges lightly with beaten egg, then fold the dough over the filling to form a rectangular pie. Press the edges with a fork to seal completely. Chill assembled pies in the fridge for 10 minutes to help maintain shape.
Heat canola oil in a heavy-bottomed pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry pies one at a time for 2-3 minutes per side, or until deep golden brown and blistered. This mimics Burger King's signature crispy, bubbly fried crust.
Remove pies using a slotted spoon and immediately roll in a mix of cinnamon and powdered sugar for that iconic cinnamon-sugar coating while still hot. Let cool slightly before serving—the filling will be hot and gooey.
