Baked mussels topped with seasoned breadcrumbs are a crunchy Pugliese appetizer. This high protein mediterranean dish is a fresh, family-friendly starter that's quick and delicious.
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a large baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup.
In a large pot, add a splash of water and bring to high heat. Add the scrubbed mussels, cover, and steam for 2–3 minutes until the shells just open. Remove mussels, discard any that stay closed.
Detach the mussels from one half of the shell and arrange them on the half shells on the prepared baking sheet, nestling each for stability.
In a mixing bowl, combine bread crumbs, grated Parmesan, garlic, chopped parsley, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Stir until evenly moistened.
Spoon the seasoned breadcrumb mixture over each mussel, pressing lightly so topping adheres. Bake in the top third of the oven for 8–10 minutes, broiling for the last 1–2 minutes until the top is crisp and golden brown. Serve promptly while hot.
