Battered and fried hot dogs on sticks are a beloved Mexican street fair treat. This family-friendly, protein-rich snack is a fun, festive food found at ferias and markets.
Insert wooden sticks into each hot dog, then pat hot dogs dry with a paper towel to help batter adhere.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well blended.
Add the egg and milk to the dry mix and whisk until a smooth, thick batter forms.
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pot over medium-high heat (350°F). Maintain the temperature throughout frying.
Dip each hot dog into the batter, turning to coat fully, then carefully lower into the hot oil; fry 2-3 at a time for 3–4 minutes, turning until golden brown.
Remove fried banderillas with tongs and place on a paper towel-lined tray to drain excess oil. Serve hot.
