Hot chocolate prepared as a Day of the Dead offering invites spirits with its warm aroma. This family tradition beverage is a rich, sacred part of the ofrenda celebration.
In a medium saucepan, pour in the water, milk, and add Mexican chocolate tablets. Set the pan over medium heat.
Stir gently and continuously, ensuring the chocolate tablets begin to dissolve. Do not let the milk boil—maintain a gentle simmer.
Once the chocolate is almost dissolved, add ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Stir until fully incorporated.
Let the mixture simmer for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Monitor the heat to avoid scalding the milk.
Remove the pan from heat. Whisk vigorously or use a molinillo to froth the chocolate before serving. Serve hot in mugs, ensuring each portion is well mixed.
