Sliced pressed tofu is braised in a five-spice soy sauce until deeply flavored and aromatic. This vegetarian, high protein family snack or side is healthy, flavorful, and perfect for meal prep.
Slice the pressed tofu into 1/4-inch thick pieces; pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
Add 1 tsp sesame oil to a skillet over medium heat. Sear both sides of tofu slices until lightly golden, about 2 minutes per side.
Add sliced scallions, minced garlic, and grated ginger to the pan. Sauté briefly until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
Pour in soy sauce, dark soy sauce, water, sugar, and five-spice powder. Stir and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat.
Reduce heat to low, cover, and braise for 15 minutes. Flip tofu once halfway to absorb flavors evenly.
Remove cover and simmer on low for an additional 5 minutes to reduce the sauce until slightly thickened. Let rest a few minutes before serving for best flavor infusion.
