Spiced 'bread of the dead' with dried fruits and cocoa honors departed loved ones. This traditional mediterranean sweet is a family baking tradition for All Souls' Day.
Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Finely chop raisins, dried figs, and prunes; mix with lemon zest in a small bowl to evenly distribute the citrus oils.
In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, almond flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, cinnamon, ground cloves, and salt for even leavening.
In a separate bowl, beat eggs, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until pale and thick, ensuring a light texture.
Combine the dry ingredients with the egg mixture, then fold in the chopped dried fruits; mix until just combined to avoid overworking the dough.
Scoop 2 tablespoons of dough at a time and shape into oval logs with damp hands; place them spaced apart on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake for 18–22 minutes, rotating halfway for even browning. The cookies should be just firm with soft centers and slightly cracked tops.
Cool completely on a wire rack, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.
