Simple yet deeply flavorful, Masoor Dal is a classic Indian lentil dish loaded with plant-based protein and fiber. This vegetarian staple supports DASH diet, lower cholesterol, and wholesome family eating.
Rinse red lentils thoroughly under cold running water until the water runs clear.
In a heavy-bottomed pot, combine the rinsed lentils and water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then lower to a gentle simmer. Skim off any foam and cook for about 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for 30 seconds, then sauté finely chopped onion until translucent, about 3–4 minutes.
Stir in minced garlic, turmeric, and chili powder. Cook for 1 minute, then add diced tomato and continue to sauté until the tomatoes soften and the mixture turns aromatic.
Pour the seasoned onion-tomato mixture into the simmering dal. Add salt and garam masala; stir well and simmer uncovered for another 10 minutes until the lentils are creamy but not mushy.
Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Remove from heat, garnish with fresh cilantro, and serve hot.
